I started writing these stories to my daughters in February of 2021. The catalyst was a letter I wrote to them explaining that I was going to divorce their mother, my wife of 36 years. The letter was very heavy. The next day I thought that maybe I should send them a story about my most embarrassing moment in life. I typed up the story and sent it. They loved it and suggested that I write them every day. I told them that everyday was too much, but I would commit to sending them one per week. Which turned into Short Story Sunday.
I didn’t stay consistent with the one per week commitment, but I did manage to write fifty-two separate stories about my life. The stories range from rants to funny to tear-jerkers, to random conversations at work. As stated, I wrote these to my daughters, but they evolved into a more generic audience as others read them and suggested I put them in a book.
I’ve always wondered if these stories would be as well received by someone that did not know me. As such, I think it would be helpful for you to know a little about the man behind the stories. I am high school educated and don’t know/understand a lot about grammar rules. I’ve been told I write well, and if I do it’s purely by chance. I am about as sarcastic as one can get. I use hyperbole to make a point and I try to create pregnant pauses with ellipses, parentheses, and hyphens. The stories have not been proofed by anybody but me, so I apologize for any errors.
These stories are all true and happened to me. But they are embellished in order to eliminate the mundane. I hope you enjoy.
The first “Short Story” is the letter that explained my looming divorce.
